Local area

History of Dowmans Farm

The 17th century Cotswolds farm with views over the Cotswolds towards Shab Hill, was owned by Frederick Winterbotham, the RAF officer responsible for distributing the intelligence gleaned from the cracking of German enigma codes at Bletchley Park, and operatives were trained at the farm buildings in espionage during the war years. Winterbotham later wrote the book The Ultra Secret, the story behind the operation.

Cobberley Village

The village of Coberley is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty within a landscape of hills and valleys. This area of fabulous countryside is mostly agricultural and comprises a mix of beautiful parkland, woodland and conventional pasture. There is a local primary school rated Ofsted ‘outstanding’ (Coberley C of E), but obviously plenty of other excellent education options in Cheltenham as well. Slightly hidden from the main road the village also benefits from the delightful parish Church of St Giles.

Golf & Walking

For golfers, there are several courses nearby including Star Golf, Ullenwood Manor, Cotswold Hills and Lilley Brook Golf Club. Another popular attraction is Crickley Hill Country Park (1.8 miles), a haven for nature and wildlife and offering miles of trails for family walks and boating breath-taking views above Gloucester and towards the Brecon Beacons.

Pubs & Entertainment

There are number of good local pubs within walking distance including the picturesque and popular Green Dragon at Cockleford, the landmark Air Balloon at Birdlip and the family-friendly Severn Springs. However, there are a host of other eating and entertainment options in nearby Cheltenham or at Gloucester Quays shopping centre.

Cheltenham Living

The historic Regency Spa town of Cheltenham is just 15mins away and is regularly voted as Best Place to Live in the South West by the Sunday Times. Education, culture and connectivity are some of the key attributes of the intimate and friendly town but it is also recognised as the Festival Town – from the oldest literature festival in the world, plus jazz, science, and music through to the world-famous horse-racing event featuring the Cheltenham Gold Cup every March.

Easy transport links

Access from Dowmans Barns is excellent, being less than a couple of minutes from the busy A435/A436, ensuring Cheltenham, Gloucester and Cirencester all within easy reach as well as the M5 at Junction 11a.
